Over two weeks of work lie behind Chur-based street artist Fabian "Bane" Florin and his colleague Linus von Moos, also known as Rips 1. Today, the new artwork on the Mühleturm (Mill Tower) was unveiled. The winner of the student competition, Mayara Texeira Ramos, was thrilled with the finished piece. The idea behind the Mühleturm project is that every two years, Switzerland's largest street art mural should shine with a new motif. As with so many things, the pandemic intervened in 2020. After three years, it was high time to replace the crystal, which had adorned the Mühleturm in Chur since 2018, with a new design. The city of Chur and Bane selected this design this summer as part of a student competition. All classes at the Chur city school were eligible to participate. The students gave free rein to their creativity when designing a small Mühleturm craft kit. Anything that was fun was allowed. Gluing, crafting, painting, drawing, etc. – children created many wonderful and beautiful designs on over 1,000 small paper mill towers. The jury, consisting of Mayor Urs Marti, Bane, Helena Mettler, head of the Chur Cultural Office, and Corina Peterelli, representing the Chur City School, had a difficult time choosing a design. The jury considered the child's perspective during the selection process. The picture should reflect the cheerful colors and carefree spirit of children. The jury found exactly this in the proposal by 8-year-old student Mayara Texeira Ramos, who attends class 2r at the Nikolai School. To preserve this aspect in the artwork, artists Bane and Rips 1 faithfully reproduced the design without any professional modifications. Mayara is understandably thrilled with the result and is delighted to see her artwork – exactly as she designed it – on the mill tower. “We are still overwhelmed by the approximately 1,000 artists who participated and feel a strong connection to them,” said Bane and Rips 1. “Translating a child’s free, carefree strokes was an exciting challenge for us.” The new artwork was unveiled in the presence of Mayor Urs Marti and the students of class 2r from the Nikolai School with their teachers. The mayor expressed his enthusiasm for the new work, which now shines brightly from the Mill Tower. “The student’s vibrant drawing on the Mill Tower shows us the world through the eyes of a child – carefree and colorful.”
